Autism Awareness Month

HAPPY NATIONAL AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH!! This month while still facing the pandemic, we want to take time to focus in on Autism Awareness. Although many may have heard the name, a lot of people aren’t aware of what Autism is. Autism is a serious developmental disorder that impairs the ability to communicate and interact. Autism spectrum disorder impacts the nervous system. Common symptoms include, difficulty with communication, difficulty with social interactions, obsessive interest and repetitive behaviors. Behavior in educational therapies are recommended to support those diagnose with Autism. As you can see the systems above may lead to hyperactivity and anxiousness, especially in younger children. As we know there is no cure for this disorder, however we must be aware of ways in which we can support those individuals who have been diagnosed with ASD. Below you will find ways in which you or someone you may know can provide support to a friend or family member that is battling with this developmental milestone:

· Challenging the commonalties of symptoms (i.e.. Engaging a young person in outdoor activities-social distancing).

· Rewarding good behavior.

· Identifying nonverbal cues.

· Identifying and paying attention to your child’s sensory sensitivities.

The list can go on…. But when we can let’s support this community and all of those who support individuals with ASD. We all need a little more love and support during these times.
